Many good businesses could be at serious risk in the current economic climate, not because of the recession itself, but because growth and positivity appear to be increasingly off the agenda.
At GHRL we believe that the recession should not be allowed to be an ‘excuse’ to accept survival as the goal. Based on the recent unprecedented economic events, GHRL feel it is time to define a ‘recession-proofing’ plan. The difference between success and failure for most businesses rests on relatively few aspects, and if it is a robust business, the right steps will help ensure a positive outcome.
Yes we are in exceptionally challenging commercial conditions, but by focusing efforts in some key strategic areas, a great number of good organisations will ensure not just survival but, more importantly, success. By psychologically moving into an acceptance that survival alone is sufficient we could be in grave danger of lowering our ambitions and that is the start of a very slippery slope.
There is no questioning the pressures on and difficulties facing many businesses as the commercial world re-positions for the short - and possibly long - term, but at GHRL we truly believe a mentality of success must be retained, and there are logical, straight forward steps that can be taken to help ensure that.
Tight budgeting, monitoring cost and curbing non-essential expenditure are some of the more obvious actions that can be taken, but managing inventory more effectively, negotiating supplier concessions, increased sales focus, improved customer service and streamlining processes are also among the key steps to success.
Many organisations just don’t fully address these strategic factors in times of prosperity and are focusing now on ‘quick fix’ actions. This is undoubtedly because many businesses, managers, owners and entrepreneurs don’t have direct experience of managing their business in a downturn or the time or the specialist expertise to address the issues brought about by the current economic climate.
As a team of over 25 interim managers, all with expertise in specific markets or disciplines and many having held high-level positions, we have been experiencing a change in the type of business support and interim resources being sought. Every business is different and has its own set of challenges, but many of the aspects which businesses are failing to address fall into similar categories.
